Membership Qualifications

For CWC Membership, please include credentials and writing sample with dues and application.

Active CWC Membership: fiction, nonfiction, poetry, plays, screenwriting, or other creative writing of quality with sufficient publication within a reasonable period.

Fiction, Nonfiction, Poetry, and Photo-Journalist: book publication by a publisher of standing within the past ten years, a book currently under contract, or publications or acceptance within the past three years of not less than three stories in a periodical(s) of general circulation.

Plays: a writer of stage plays, screenplays, radio plays, television plays, or videos, shall have had a publication, performance, production, or production in development within the last ten years.

Self-publishers: a publisher or writer whose material has been published under his/her own imprint will be judged at the discretion of the accreditation committee, the criteria of the material submitted to be judged on:

  1. Professional presentation of writing style
  2. Professional presentation as to graphics
  3. Plans of distribution of the published material.
  4. In addition, the branch accreditation committee shall reserve the right to determine if the quality of the publication meets the high standards of professional writing. This evaluation deals only with the standard of the writing and not with the genre or the content.
  5. Similarly a writer who publishes his/her own material electronically shall be judged as to the professional presentation of the writing style and professional graphics employed to determine if it meets the high standards of professional writing.

Associate CWC Membership shall be accorded to those persons who qualify by submission of writing material that is approved by the Branch Board as clear evidence of acceptable writing quality or by demonstrated interest and pursuit of writing for publication/production. Associate members have the right to vote, serve on the branch board of directors, and represent their branches on the Central Board.

Special Cases Relating to Non-writing Literary Professionals:

If no demonstrated conflict of interest exists, branches may accord Associate membership to career professional in areas related to writing. These adjunct memberships may include: editors, librarians, agents, booksellers, publishers, producers, directors and book illustrators. Literary agents may be considered only if their agency has had at least three published clients and is a member in good standing of the Association of Authors’ Representatives.

Student CWC Membership – offered to writers from the ages of 8 to 22. Student members are not eligible to vote or hold office on the branch or state level.

Supporting CWC Membership – are for those who wish to support the branch, but are not interested in a writing career. These members are entitled to the same privileges and benefits as Active and Associate members, except that they may not vote, hold office at the branch or state level. These memberships are limited to three consecutive years.

Included with an approved membership is a subscription to the monthly Newsletter, Redwood Writers.

Special Offer for Non-Members

The non-member subscription price for the Redwood Writers newsletter is $16.00 annually. Those interested in joining the Redwood Writers who are not yet a member may receive the Newsletter via e-mail for one year to gauge their interest.
