Author Patricia Volonakis Davis, member of Women's National Book Association and California Writers Club, announces that Susannah Greenberg of Bookbuzz.com has agreed to represent her as her new publicist. Susannah (also a member of Women's National Book Association) is working hard to help promote the re-release of Patricia's book, Harlot's Sauce: A Memoir of Food, Family, Love, Loss, and Greece (Coming November 2009)
To celebrate the re-release of the book with its new cover, which features more book blurbs by best-selling author Kemble Scott, (SoMa, The Sower) a number of lovely print and web reviews, and an award seal from USA Book News, the author decided to do something a bit different than the usual author recordings. So, she asked three extraordinary actors - Gaetano Iacono (Doughboys, Twist of Fate), Maryann Maisano (founder of the girl comedy team/band, The Italian Chicks), and Anthony Skordi (Vanessa Redgrave's Moving Theatre Company) - if they would participate in this project with her. Each of them recorded in their own separate studios, which were scattered everywhere from Los Angeles, to San Francisco, to New Jersey and even via Skype from Staten Island! They were then all mixed onto one track by producer Bruce Foster, who also added clips from the Harlot’s Sauce theme, "Sex in Athens" by Treatment of Saints Aviators.
The author feels blessed that she had all these talented people to help her with these podcasts, because they truly brought her story to life. Podcasts are on her website at: www.patriciaVdavis.com and are currently being made into videos, with photographs, drawings and graphics, the first of which has already been posted on YouTube at this link: www.youtube.com/watch?v=h9esU5VHSJc

Our voices tell of growing up and growing old, our past and our present, and, most importantly, our connection to each other. Our voices are celebratory, poignant, humorous, or sad, yet the collective effect is a symphony in four-part harmony.
Vintages Voices: Four-Part Harmony can be ordered for $6.00 as an Ebook or $11.95 paperback at: www.iUniverse.com or phone 1-800-AUTHORS.
Praise for Vintage Voices 3Vintage Voices, Four-Part Harmony, is a multifaceted collection of works by the Redwood Writers, Sonoma County Branch of the California Writers Club. It contains poems, memoirs, essays, and short stories that engage a variety of themes and styles. The single constant that holds the content together in a single work is the quality of each contribution. It is published by iUniverse, Inc., http://www.iuniverse.com/.
- Beth L. Virtanen, PhD, www.finnala.com, September 2008
Founded in 1909 by such members as Jack London, the California Writers Club now has 18 branches in the Golden State, including the Redwood Writers Club, based in the North Bay. Devoted to helping writers hone and market their craft, Redwood Writers host monthly meets and annual contests and also collects its members work. The third and latest such compilation, Vintage Voices: Four-Part Harmony, edited by Karen Batchelor, Ana Manwaring and Pat Tyler (iUniverse; $11.95), consciously weaves the prose, poetry and essays collected into a songlike rhythm.
Writing instructor Marlene Cullen's short sketch of a woman's life, "Hannah Mae," is followed abruptly by James Seamarsh's two-page vignette in a prostitute's room ("Second Story Bedroom"), which in turn is followed by "Beneath the Canopy," Helen Pitt's memoir of a widow taking her young son to the Queensland tropics. With the intimate voice of first person predominating, Vintage Voices gives a palimpsestic glimpse into the lives of our neighbors that is well worth searching out. —G.G.

Karen Batchelor recently received a great review for her book, Murder at Ocean View College.
"Engaging Murder Mystery for Immigrants, ESL Students, and Criminal Justice Majors, July 3, 2008 By Eric H. Rot hPursuing a killer and disregarding direct orders, two dedicated police academy students struggle to solve a murder and establish their street credentials in this engaging detective story. Written in a clear, direct, and concise style, this thriller should appeal to English language learners, adult ESL students, and young adults interested in criminal justice careers. The vocabulary will stretch students without intimidating them. It's easy to imagine immigrant and community college students enjoying the book, particularly since the main characters resemble them in so many ways. Karen Batchelor, an experienced ESL author, knows both her subject and her target audience. Murder at Ocean View College should develop a loyal following among both educators and students and might even become a seminal work in this rapidly expanding niche area. High school libraries, community college ESL programs, and adult school counselors will find this book a popular addition to their bookshelves. It's a winner!"

Author Tayari Jones writes on her blog, “A couple of years ago, I met Karen Batchelor, author of Murder at Ocean View College. It’s a mystery, and a good one, but also it’s a novel designed to help adults who are just learning to read.” Please visit Tayari’s blog for a Q&A with Karen at www.tayarijones.com
IGI Global published Rob Koslowsky’s contribution to the Handbook of Research on Computer Mediated
Communication in May 2008. Rob Koslowsky wrote one of the 69 chapters in the Handbook. This reference source is an authoritative collection of research on the implications and social effects computers have had on communication. It addresses the fact that technology has changed communication drastically in recent years, facilitating the speed and ease of communicating, and also redefining and shaping linguistics, etiquette, and social communication norms. Rob says it was a pleasure working with editors Sigrid Kelsey and Kirk St. Amant.

Catharine Bramkamp Published - What
do Realtors do during a down market? Catharine Bramkamp wrote a mystery novel, Death Revokes the Offer, about a Realtor in a down market. When the author began her career in real
estate two years ago, she had no idea that:
A.
The market would tank,
B.
The term short sale does not refer to a length of time, and
C.
Realtors, on a daily basis, court danger.
Who
else cheerfully accepts rides from strangers? Who else advertises they
will be alone in an empty house from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM? Who else walks the
street and knocks on doors, and if invited, walks in? Who routinely meets
unfamiliar people at empty homes?
It’s
surprising that so many Realtors avoid mayhem. But in the fictional real estate
world of Allison Little – A Little Goes a Long Way – mayhem, murder and menace
merge into a marvelously original good time.

had no idea you were so funny. Your wit, wisdom and information are second to
none.” - Bud Gardner (with Jack Canfield and Mark Victor Hansen)

David Prothero submitted the winning logo design that was recently approved by the California Writers Club central board. Congratulations David! Below is the proper layout when using the new Redwood Writers logo. The CWC logo is always placed to the left and the Redwood Writers logo is placed to the right with the words “Redwood Branch of California Writers Club” highlighting the relationship. In keeping with the redwood image, our logo reminds us that we are a branch and not a chapter or an affiliate. Words do matter…

In keeping with our motto, Writers Helping Writers, in 2008, the Redwood Writers presented a series of
Editing Workshops.
The workshop presenters included: - Marlene Cullen, local writing coach and leader of Writers Forum, helped us understand the need for editing. Danny Snow of Unlimited Publishing also discussed publishing options.
- Jordan Rosenfeld, once-local author now writing for Writer’s Digest, helped us get started on that all-important process of revision.
- Susan Bono, local editor of Tiny Lights, taught us the necessity of using just the right word or phrasing so that our story sparkles.
- Georgia Hughes, writer and editorial director for New World Library, complete the workshop series by teaching us to self-correct technical errors.
The entire workshop series was supported by Poets & Writers, Inc. through a grant it has received from The James Irvine Foundation.
